1818  Congress decided the United States flag would consist of 13 red and white stripes and 20 new stars
would have a new star added for every new state of the Union.

Nearly 8000 Jews fought in the Civil War. Many were from Washington DC and from Alexandira. Washington DC's Jewish Community grew from 200 Jews to almost 2000 during the Civil War.

1860  November 6  Abraham Lincoln was elected the 16th President of the United States of America
1860  December 20  South Carolina secedes

1861  February 9    Seven seceded states- SC, MS, FL, AL, GA, LA, TX -f1orm the Confederate States of
          America
1861  March 4   President Lincolns First Inauguration took place
1861  March 24    Union forces occupied Alexandria Virginia
1861  April 12   The Civil War started at Fort Sumter located in South Carolina
1861  July 21   The Confederates win the First Battle of Bull Run near Manassas Virginia
1861  August 24  Eugenia Phillips, a Southener, was arrested for spying in Washington

1862  April 16   About 3000 slaves were freed with the signing of the District of Columbias Emancipation Act
1862 July 17   President Lincoln signed laws authorizing Rabbis to serve as battlefield Chaplains
          Washington DC had 6 kosher restaurants during the Civil War
1862  August 28 - 30  The Confederates won the Second Battle of Bull Run near Manassas Virginia
1862  December 4   Bernhard Behrend asked President Lincoln to grant Jewish soldiers leave for Sabbath
1862  December 17  Major General Ulysses S Grant issued General Orders No 11 expelling Jews from the  
          Department of the Tennessee including parts of Illinois, Kentucky and Mississippi

1863  January 1   President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclomation freeing slaves in the 
          Southern States
          January 1   Washington Hebrew Congregation bought its first building at 8th and I streets in NW DC
1863  January 17  Jewish emissaries persuade President Lincoln to revoke General Orders No. 11
1863  July 1 - 3   The Battle of Gettysburg Pennsylvania turned the tide in the Civil War

1864  Alexandria's Beth El Hebrew Congregation hired its first spiritual leader
1864  March 10  President Lincoln promoted Ulysses S Grant to command all the Union Armies
1864  May 5 - 7  The Battle of the Wilderness Virginia was fought. Leopold Karpeles was awarded the Medal
          the Medal of Honor for his Bravery
1864  July 11 - 12  President Lincoln witnessed the Battle of Fort Stevens within the borders of the
          District of Columbia

1865  March 5  President Lincoln's second inauguration was held
1865  April 9   General Robert E Lee surrenders to Grant at Appomattox Virginia
1865  April 14   John Wilkes Booth mortrally wounded President Lincoln in Fords Theater. Dr Charles 
          Lieberman was one of the doctors attending the President at his bedside
1865  April 15   President Lincoln died
1865  April 19  125 congregants from Washington Hebrew Congregation were amongst the marchers
          attending President Lincoln in his funeral procession. Beth El Hebrew held a memorial service for
          the late President
1865  December 6  Slavery was abolished when the 13th Amendment was ratified
1868  April 15  One of the first memorial statues to President Lincoln was unveiled at 4th and D Streets in
          NW. The Landsburgh brothers donated to its creation
